The historical Beehive Huts (Clocháin) are the distinctive corbelled drystone buildings synonymous with West Kerry and made famous in recent Star Wars Movies. The Beehive Huts at this site were recently excavated and are thought to date from the 7th century. The Beehive huts carry the name "Clocháin Bóthar an Trasnaigh" and may have been used as hostels for pilgrims on their way to Mount Brandon as there is also a boulder inscribed with three crosses proving a connection to Christianity.
There is also a later and smaller hut to the rear of the Famine cottage and was most likely used to house the pig (the pig was traditionally sold to fund the payment of rent to the landlord). The style of building thus continued right up to the 19th century.
